Whoever wondered that cows could be potty trained too!
Some scientists in New Zealand put the task to the test. It turned out, cows can be trained just like toddlers! Perhaps, our bovine friends might be even easier than humans!
Of the 16 cows they trained, 11 learned to use the astroturf-covered pen that the scientists nicknamed as ‘MooLoo’ to urinate.
Like parents do to the babies, these researchers used treats to get the cows to the MooLoo when they had to go. Some of the young calves learned it as quickly as 15 days!
“The cows are at least as good as children, age 2 to 4 years, at least as quick,” the study senior author Lindsay Matthews told the AP news agency.
However, no matter how funny it sounds, according to Matthews this wasn’t just a “wow, this could be fun project. It was serious as a huge urine waste is a serious environmental issue.”
And yes, the cows indeed pee a lot – about 8 gallons of urine a day.
Duke University animal cognition scientist Brian Hare said, “I am not surprised they can train calves to urinate in set locations, but I am surprised no one has demonstrated this before. The critical question is can it and will it scale?”
By the way, they only trained cows to use the MooLoo to urinate, not poop. And it’s no bull, only cows.
However, if the study becomes successful, it will indeed be a big deal as it will ease managing waste production, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, said Donald Broom, a professor of animal welfare at the University of Cambridge.
